Finding The Right EPOS System For Your Business

An EPOS system, or electronic point of sale system, is very useful for any business. If you need to select something new, you may find yourself confused; there are a lot of vendors out there, and they all say they have a leg up on the competition. So, if you need one of these systems, what do you do?

  1. Have A Goal

You need to have an EPOS goal. Some businesses just need their system to take care of transactions that happen over the counter. If that is all you want, you have a fairly simple goal. You don’t need a complicated system; you just need something that will take care of your transactions and not cause any extra headaches.

You may need more from your electronic point of sale system, however. Do you want to establish a loyalty program? Do you need stock control? Is key performance indicator management important to you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need a more complicated EPOS system.

Don’t make any quick decisions. Before you purchase anything, think through what your needs are. Is your EPOS system going to function primarily as a cash register? Or, is it going to help support your business in other ways as well?

  1. Cabling Is Crucial

If you are just putting in one till, you don’t have to worry about cabling. However, if you are going to have at least two tills, you have to think about what you need in the way of cabling. This is an important consideration and is something you should think about ahead of time.

Configuring the CAT 5 that you need to take care of a newer EPOS system is not that easy. In general, it is not something you should try and do on your own. Instead, work with an experienced contractor. Have them survey the property and figure out what you need. In addition, make sure you set aside the money needed to take care of running the cables.

  1. Don’t Let A Name Fool You

In the past, you didn’t have very many options when it come to an EPOS system. You could buy something that was really inexpensive or you could put a little more money into it and get a touch screen till. These more expensive tills took a lot of installation and a lot of training.

It’s very different today. There are so many EPOS terminals out there, and most of them are affordable. There are also a lot of well-known manufacturers that have gotten involved. However, these big names shouldn’t fool you. Most of the terminals are exactly the same but are under a different brand. However, don’t scrimp or you may need EPOS repair at some stage. Do your research and then make a decision.

  1. Find Out What Others Are Using

Do you know other business owners? Do they have tills? Do they like what they have? Question them to find out what they are using and why they like it. If you can visit the business in question to see the till in action, that is even better.

  1. Two-Way PMS Interfaces Are Best

Your booking system is important, too. If you want your EPOS system to work the way it should, a two-way interface to the PMS (Property Management System) is crucial. This allows you to add bills from the pub directly to the guests’ bedroom accounts. It has other benefits as well.

If you choose an EPOS system that does not have a two-way PMS interface, you may not be happy with it in a few months or a few years. Think about your needs now but also consider where you will be in the future.

  1. Avoid Expensive Leasing

Most people that purchase a till system lease it. You don’t have to pay a lot of money up front and can instead simply pay for the system on a monthly basis.

However, you need to be cautious. If you don’t get a good leasing package, you could wind up spending too much money. Before you sign up, look to see what the terms are. How much is the interest rate? When the lease is over, what do you do?
